An immune system is a collection of mechanisms within an organism that protects against infection by identifying and killing pathogens and tumour cells. It detects a wide variety of pathogens, such as viruses and parasitic worms and distinguishes them from the organism's normal cellsand tissues. Detection is complicated as pathogens adapt and evolvenew ways to successfully infect the host organism. Immunology is a science that examines the structure and function of the immune system. It originates from medicine and early studies on the causes of immunity to disease. The earliest known mention of immunity was during the plague of Athens in 430 BC. Thucydide noted that people who had recovered from a previous bout of the disease could nurse the sick without contracting the illness a second time. This observation of acquired immunity was later exploited by Louis Pasteur in his development of vaccination and his proposed germ theory of disease. Pasteur's theory was in direct opposition to contemporary theories of disease, such as the miasma theory. It was not until Robert Koch's 1891 proofs, for which he was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1905, that microorganisms were confirmed as the cause of infectious disease. Viruses were confirmed as human pathogens in 1901, with the discovery of the yellow fever virus by Walter Reed.
In the modern world we are exposed to innumerable disease causing agents and to increasingly prolonged periods of stress. Yet the human body, with its intricacies, beauty and mysteries shows a remarkable ability to survive. Cells, organs, proteins and hormones, each one essential to our body’s proper function, all work together in order to keep us alive and healthy. At the core of our ability to stay alive lies our immune system, a system of astonishing complexity.Essential oils are said to support and strengthen the immune response in two ways. They fight directly against micro-organisms and help our organs to increase their activity to create cells. Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Lavender and Tea Tree are all said to combine both these actions Although Manuka is a relatively new addition to the European repertoire it has many properties which make a valuable contribution in stimulating the growth of healthy new cells.
We and our supplier make no medicinal claims for this blend of oil and it is important to read the warning before use. This product is most effective when used as a massage oil.
